Thermocouple:
Thermocouple is an important part of a safety
device used on controls for gas fired home appliances.
It consists of two different types of metals welded
together at one end (hot junction) When the thermocouple’s
hot junction is warmed up, an electromotive force
(EMF) is produced. This millivoltage is used to
hold open an electromagnet assembly in the gas control.
If the pilot flames goes out because of drafts,
etc. , the thermocouple will cool off and no longer
generate electricity. This will allow the electromagnets
to de-energize, close the gas valve, and prevent
gas from continuing to flow to the main burner and
pilot.
